Sewl Sister Brand Launch!

What was the inspiration behind Sewl Sister?

Sewl Sister started as an idea associated with wanting to create something that would stir the soul, allow me to be free to design and build a brand that would help others learn to have a love for sewing.  For me, sewing really does that for me.  I want to bring back sewing skills to a younger generation and make it fun, exciting, and new again.  I want to share my passion for sewing.  By teaching others to sew and create with fabric, I will empower young women to use their new seamstress skills to create an income for themselves and become entrepreneurs in their own right.  I want it to stir their sewl and ignite and desire to create change in the world.

What are some of the things you will offer on Sewl Sister?

I will be offering various products for purchase that I have designed and made myself.  I will be sharing various techniques and skills related to sewing.  I will also share designs and patterns of different "do it yourself" type projects for free.  I plan to offer designs and patterns for purchase also.  I will also be planning to have local classed and workshops focusing on teaching young children, women, and adults and go through a particular sewing project during that workshop time.

When did you first start sewing?

I first started sewing at a young age of about 7-8 years old.  I remember making doll clothes with a needle and thread.  I made pants, shirts, skirts, and dresses for my dolls.  It was rough estimates on sizing and I didn't really measure anything but I had fun doing it.  I also remember my first sewing machine project was a horrible pillowcase and stuffed bunny rabbit that I had made.  You would have thought I had no hope in the seamstress world!  In 2006, after getting married, my parents gifted me my first sewing machine and I made my very first quilt, which I gave to my sister.  I've made many quilts, blankets, clothes, and other projects since then.

How did you determine your brand and marketing strategy?

I was fortunate to find a really great friend, Sibyl Smith, who has continued to be my mentor and branding and marketing coach.  She has helped me really create the vision of what I'm wanting to achieve with Sewl Sister.  Sibyl reminds me that Sewl Sister is so much more than just teaching others to sew, but it's about empowering others to grow.  Through her wonderful graphics design and artwork, my vision is coming alive. Please check out more on Sibyl at everyonehasachoice.com .  She is a great resource!

What does the future of Sewl Sister look like?

I want to continue designing products that will show my sewing creativity.  I'm looking into using various types of fabric and possibly incorporate fairtrade organic cotton into my products.  I want to write a book that discusses creating an idea and turning it into a business vehicle for personal, physical, and financial growth.  There is a lot to do!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start something like Sewl Sister?

Really look at why you are wanting to create your unique idea.  Then, link arms with those that can help you get the idea off of the ground.  Ask as many people as you can for help.  People will turn away and they may not answer when you ask for help.  That's what happened to me, time and time again.  But don't give up!  There is a place in this world for your unique talents.
