This Freedom Journey quilt is a simple play on flying geese. It was designed to represent the journey that slaves had to take across the country to freedom. I discovered that quilts played an important part in bringing slaves to freedom. Quilts were hung outside safe homes and held a symbolic message. Slaves knew, when they saw the quilts, which way to travel, how to get to safe places, or if they needed disguises - for example, bow tie quilts. The flying geese pattern would be used to convey the direction to travel to safety en route to either the underground railroad or freedom. These quilts and the Black Lives Matter movement are the inspiration behind me creating this quilt.

I did a really simple tie-off method for quilting using square knots. It’s simple right?! Well, that’s exactly how freedom should be in this country and in the world. That’s why I made it simple. Because everyone gets to have this pattern. And, everyone gets to be FREE.

Please follow along with me as I begin my very first Quilt Along Party with you! I’ll be starting Nov 9, 2020 and it will be a 4 week QAL project.
